Hepatitis C Awareness Month: Inform, Prevent, Cure

EducationalHepatitis C

May is Hepatitis C Awareness Month, a crucial time for raising awareness about this common yet often overlooked disease. At Positive Resource Connection, we dedicate ourselves to supporting our community with free testing and treatment options for Hepatitis C. Here’s what you need to know to stay informed and help prevent the spread of Hepatitis C.

Understanding Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Many people don’t realize how common it is, with an estimated 2.4 million individuals in the United States living with the infection. Furthermore, Hepatitis C is significantly more transmissible than HIV.

The Good News: Hepatitis C is Curable and Preventable!

Hepatitis C is completely curable if detected early through testing. Since many people with Hepatitis C do not show symptoms until the disease has progressed, regular testing is crucial.

Why Early Detection is Important

  • Prevent Liver Damage: Detecting Hepatitis C early can prevent significant liver damage, including cirrhosis and liver cancer, which can occur if the virus is left untreated for a long time.
  • Faster Treatment: Early detection allows for prompt treatment, which can be more straightforward and might prevent the virus from causing severe health complications.
  • Prevent Transmission: Knowing you have Hepatitis C early on can help you take measures to avoid transmitting the virus to others.

Cure at Any Stage

  • Advanced Stages: Even if Hepatitis C is detected at a later stage, modern antiviral treatments are highly effective. Over 90% of people, including those with advanced liver disease, can be cured.
  • Treatment Duration: The length and type of treatment may vary depending on the stage of liver disease, but most people can achieve a cure within 8 to 12 weeks.

Prevention Tips

Preventing Hepatitis C involves understanding how the virus is transmitted and taking steps to avoid exposure. Here are some key prevention tips:
